Telecommunications solutions supplier Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has signed significant framework agreements with China’s leading teleoperators, China Mobile and China Unicom. NSN has agreed to provide the operators with 2G and 3G mobile technology equipment and services valued at EUR 880 million in total during 2009.
The deal is the largest yet in the relatively short NSN history.
The previous record was from January 2007. At that time NSN agreed a deal worth EUR 770 million with the Saudi-Arabian teleoperator Zain. Nokia and Siemens launched their joint mobile network operation in April 2007.

NSN will provide China Mobile with 3G network equipment based on the TD-SCDMA technology and GSM network equipment. NSN has developed its TD-SCDMA technology in cooperation with its Chinese competitor Huawei.
The networks that NSN will roll out for China Unicom in turn utilise the so-called WCDMA technology, which is the most widely-used 3G network technology in the world. China Unicom has networks in 11 of China’s 22 provinces.

In addition to the network technology, NSN will also provide both operators with services that support for example the networks’ technical management, maintenance, and software updating.
In terms of the number of connections, China Mobile is the largest mobile telecommunications operator in the world, while China Unicom is currently ranked 6th. China Mobile has around half a billion mobile subscribers and China Unicom just fewer than 130 million.

Last week the Swedish firm Ericsson, the market leader in mobile network technologies, announced that it had secured a 30 per cent share of China Unicom’s new 3G network contracts.
