This year's Tieto Finlandia prize for non-fiction was awarded on Thursday to the three authors of a book on sports in ancient Greece and Rome.
The authors, Mika Rissanen, Sami Koski, and Juha Tahvanainen, will share EUR 26,000 in prize money.
For the work, the three combined their love of sport with their knowledge of the history of antiquity and the Greek and Latin languages.
In their research, they went through dozens of books written in the original languages. Some translations were also used, such as those of the works of Homer.
The original plan was for a modest booklet on the sports world of antiquity to mark the year of the Athens Olympic Games. The writers managed to stay on schedule somewhat better than the organisers of last year's Olympics. They submitted their manuscript in December 2003, and Antiikin urheilu ("Sport of Antiquity") came out in the spring of 2004.
The publisher, Jyväskylä-based Atena, unexpectedly turned the manuscript into a large, colourful tome.
