Nordic Countries to support Finnish bid to get seat on UN Security Council in 2013-2014

"A renaissance of Nordic cooperation is taking place", said Finnish Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva (Nat. Coalition Party) on Friday after a meeting of foreign ministers of the Nordic Countries in Helsinki.
His colleagues basically agreed. On Friday, the ministers focused on slowing climate change and developing the Baltic Sea region.
The ministers had not yet discussed Finland's bid to get a seat on the United Nations Security Council for 2013 and 2014. However, the other Nordic Countries said that they would give their full support to Finland in the matter.
Before starting its own campaign on the issue, Finland plans to join the other Nordic Countries in support of Iceland's membership in the Security Council for 2009 and 2010, Kanerva emphasised.
Norway's Foreign Minister Jonas Gahr Støre said that it is "an old and good tradition" for the Nordic Countries to support each others' candidacies. "Kind of like in Eurovision", joked Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt.
The Nordic Foreign Ministers will meet again next week in Malmö in the south of Sweden at a meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Council of Baltic Sea States. At that time there will be discussion on matters such as the reform of the activities and structure of the council.
