In what at least sounds like a development in the right direction, and which backs up earlier indications from January and from last autumn, the number of suspected drunk drivers in Finland fell slightly in 2010.
Out of all blood samples examined by the National Bureau of Investigation some 8,800 contained alcohol, and in more than 90 per cent of those cases the driver’s blood alcohol content exceeded the legal limit for driving and punitive action could be taken against them.
In 2009, the blood alcohol content of a driver was examined from almost 9,600 samples.
At the same time, the number of breath samples estimated by using a precision breathalyser came down last year to slightly less than 11,400.
The proportion of those who exceeded the limit for drunk-driving fell just short of 90 per cent.
The number of those drivers who were suspected of driving under the influence of narcotics remained at the same level as in 2009.
