Objects placed on train tracks cause a couple of hundred potentially dangerous situations each year on the railroads in Finland.
“Luckily no serious accidents have happened yet”, says Yrjö Poutiainen, Director of Safety at Finnish Railways (VR).
“There has been damage of varying degrees from dents to the locomotive to broken brake systems”, Poutiainen continues.

The latest incident took place on Sunday morning, when a passenger train from Pori to Tampere ran into a railroad tie that had been rolled onto the track near the Harjavalta station.
The crosstie lodged itself into the engine’s so-called cattle plough, from which the train’s driver and conductor fortunately managed to detach it.
The train was delayed by ten minutes because of the episode. The incident was first reported by the Satakunnan Kansa daily.
