Occupy Wall Street sparks spinoff demo in Helsinki
Demonstration 150 protesters to Narinkkatori
About 150 people took part in an Occupy Helsinki demonstration, which was part of an international extension of the Occupy Wall Street protests taking place in New York.
Organisers of the Helsinki event on the Narinkkatori Square in front of the Kamppi Center shopping complex were calling on the economic elite to listen to the voice of the people.
There were other events in a number of other Finnish cities as well, including Tampere, Oulu and Turku.
The fairly small events in Finland passed off peacefully.
In Rome, however, tens of thousands of protesters filled the centre of the city, and some of those involved set fire to cars and broke windows.
Police resorted to tear gas and water cannons.
Another large demonstration took place in the Portuguese capital Lisbon, where 20,000 people took to the streets. Smaller demonstrations were seen in Athens, Stockholm, Berlin, London, Madrid, and Tokyo.
