The Finnish recording label Ondine's CD of three recent works by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho has won a MIDEM Classical Award 2009 in the ‘Contemporary Music' category.
The award was presented to cellist Anssi Karttunen at the official awards ceremony at the Midem event in Cannes yesterday.
The recording features the world première performance of Mirage (2007) for soprano, cello and orchestra, featuring soprano Karita Mattila and Anssi Karttunen, the artists to whom Saariaho dedicated the work.
They are backed by the Orchestre de Paris under Christoph Eschenbach.
The live recording also includes Notes on Light, a cello concerto composed for Karttunen in 2006, and Orion (2002) for symphony orchestra.
