A total of 597,000 Finnish households had acquired a digital television decoder by the beginning of March this year. This means that 25% of Finnish households are equipped with digital decoders for antenna, cable, or satellite reception.
Most of the decoders are for antenna reception.
The information is from a quarterly survey by Finnpanel involving questionnaires sent to 3,000 homes chosen at random.
Finnpanel managing director Leena Sandelin says that sales of digital decoders have increased steadily in Finland. However, sales figures have not been as high as had been hoped. At the current rate 40% of Finns will not be ready when digital television takes over in August 2007.
However, Sandelin says that she expects Finns to make a final spurt before analog transmissions are shut down. She adds that some families already have two or three digital decoders.
The devices are the most common in households with children, and in detached houses.
A number of European countries, including Sweden, Spain, Italy, and the UK, are to shut down analog television transmissions in the near future.
In the UK 60% of households have a digital decoder, while in Sweden the figure is just 30%.
