Organisers of the Ourvision Song Contest say that 139 performers have entered this year’s contest. This is slightly more than the number of entries last year.
Arranged by the International Cultural Centre Caisa in Helsinki for the third year running, the contest is intended for singers of an immigrant background living in Finland.
The events of the contest begin on Friday this week, with the Afrovision tryouts at the International Cultural Centre Caisa.
The competitors are divided into five groups: Asiavision, Afrovision, Americavision, Europevision, and Middle Eastvision.
The five best entries of each groups continue to the semifinals, which will be held at the Savoy Theatre, and the two best of those will move on to the Grand Finale on April 25th at Finlandia Hall.
The first Ourvision singing contest was held in 2007, and ran parallel to the Eurovision Song Contest, which was held in Helsinki in that year.
The aim was to showcase the musical talent within the immigrant community, which might otherwise not get the attention it deserves.
Last year’s contest was won by Iolanta Savva of Moldovan origin, who later won a recording deal for a single and a music video.
