Parking restricted during summits in Helsinki

Because of the ASEM and Ecofin summits as well as simultaneous state visits, parking will be restricted in certain places in the centre of Helsinki from Friday to Monday.
Parking will be restricted chiefly in the vicinity of hotels. Moreover, parking is prohibited for example in front of and occasionally in the neighbouring streets around hotels Kämp, Grand Marina, Klaus K, Torni, and Marski.
"Hotel Kalastajatorppa [in Munkkiniemi] is another story. The hotel will host the state visit of the President of the Republic of Korea, which starts on Thursday and continues through September 12th", says Sgt. Martti Miekkoniemi from the Helsinki Police Department.
Parking will be prohibited in Mannerheimintie from Aleksanterinkatu to Kaivokatu, and there will be some prohibitions even in the two Esplanades.
Further restrictions include the House of the Estates and during events - mainly on Saturday - even at Smolna, the Government Banquet Hall on the Southern Esplanade.
Ordinary traffic signs indicating chargeable and time-restricted parking areas have been replaced by temporary signs prohibiting parking in Radiokatu, Pasilankatu, and in front of the Pasila Police Precinct over the period of September 8th to 12th.
"Besides security, also other aspects are related to these restrictions, the most important being ease of access. For example, there is often plenty of traffic in front of hotels, with all delegations and other visitors. Hence attempts have been made to make access to the hotels easier", Miekkoniemi reports.
While the parking restrictions have been initiated by the police, the City of Helsinki has actually implemented them.
