Plans drafted to bring seasonal ice rink to liven up Helsinki's central railway
station square
Removable artificial ice track may be introduced next autumn
The City of Helsinki wants to pump life into its heart by introducing a seasonal outdoor ice rink in the midst of all the traffic and masses of people. The location could hardly be more central: Rautatientori is adjacent to the main railway station.
Inspiration for the high standard ice track creation has been sought from the likes of Copenhagen's Kongens Nytorv.
Helsinki's version, which would operate from November till March, is likely to be introduced in the autumn of 2005.
Plans for the ice rink project are currently being drawn up at the City of Helsinki Sports Department.
The EUR 950,000 price tag for an attraction that will be open for only a few months of the year may nevertheless cause some problems.
Anssi Rauramo, head of the city's Sports Department, argues that the attraction would serve not only as a sports facility but also as a tourist draw. Visually it would bring life to Helsinki's cityscape.
