Plans revived for Lenin statue

 print this
Dozens of well-known Finnish cultural personalities have signed a proposal to acquire a red granite statue of Lenin and to set it up in Helsinki’s Lenin Park in the central district of Alppila.

The persons in favour of the plan include actors Sinikka Sokka, Sulevi Peltola, and Vesa Vierikko, singer Jussi Raittinen, film director Mika Kaurismäki, theatre director Jouko Turkka, as well as Pentti Linkola, a radical and often controversial Finnish environmentalist who works as a professional fisherman.
The supporters of the sculpture project submitted their proposal to Mayor of Helsinki Jussi Pajunen on Wednesday.
There were plans for the erection of a Lenin statue in 2000. However, the project failed as a result of the vehement opposition of local citizens.
