The Helsinki Police Drug Squad has found the crowns of Finnish beauty queens which were stolen at the end of last year.
The crowns of Miss Finland and Miss Scandinavia, as well as the tiaras of the runners-up of Miss Finland were found on Wednesday in connection with a house search in the cellar of an apartment building in Northern Helsinki.
Drug Squad officers had apprehended a youngish woman suspected of a drug-related crime and found a small quantity of drugs in her possession.
In connection with the house search, the woman voluntarily handed the crowns over to the police.
”Apparently she has not stolen the headgear herself, but has just hidden them in her cupboard in the cellar”, says Detective Inspector Jari Pynnönen.
For the time being, the police do not know the identity of the actual thief. The crowns were stolen from the office of Finnartist, the organiser of the Miss Finland beauty contests, at the turn of the months of November and December.
The crowns had been packed in plastic and paper bags, and they were slightly the worse for wear for their two-month disappearance. The crown worn by Miss Finland had suffered the worst damage.
The crowns were returned to the organisers of the beauty contests on Thursday. Managing Director Pertti Himberg of Finnartist reports that it is uncertain whether or not the crowns will be repaired and used ever again.
Early this week Himberg already said that in the future Finnish beauty queens will be crowned with new headdresses.
In terms of hard cash, the stolen crowns were not worth a great deal, but nevertheless they have a certain traditional value. The crown of Miss Finland has been in use since the end of the 1970s, and that of Miss Scandinavia since 1962.
