Police list of blocked child porn sites published online

A list of sites to be blocked as containing child pornography, which was drawn up by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), has been published on a website dedicated to revealing leaked secret documents.
News of the leak first came out in Tuesday’s edition of the Kuopio-based newspaper Savon Sanomat.
Finnish Internet operators use the list of about 800 sites to block access to those sites.
The list itself is confidential, but ascertaining the contents through technical means is not illegal.

The NBI suspects that the list has been leaked from Finland. It requested help from US authorities on the matter. The NBI says that getting the list off the Internet is difficult because of the strong protection of online speech in the United States.
“Now we are checking to see if this meets the American definition of involvement in the spread of child phonography”, says Lars Henriksson of the NBI.
Information on the site has been dispersed to several countries to make it difficult to remove information. The Finnish list can be downloaded from servers in Poland, Sweden, and Tonga.

The site in question also published Denmark’s list of child pornography sites to be blocked, and that list is still available on line.
The service says that the Danish list has been mirrored to servers in other countries, including Finland.
Those who published the list say that they are opposed to child pornography, but they also feels that such blocks can be expanded to apply to other material that governments disapprove of.
In Finland, the list has been published online by Internet activist Matti Nikki. The NBI has added his pages to the list of sites to be blocked.
