A total of 33 motorists had their driving licences suspended by Helsinki’s Mobile Police as a result of dangerous driving and flagrant speeding on Saturday and the following night.
According to the police, the majority of the aggravated traffic offences were speed violations. The number of drunk drivers was only three - an exceptionally low figure by normal standards.
On the other hand, the police picked up 24 licence holders driving at 40 to 50 kilometres per hour over the limit.

The most serious violation was found on the Länsiväylä motorway leading west, where a motorist was clocked driving at 206 kilometres per hour in an area where the speed limit is 100km/h. On the Lahti motorway leading north and east, in the district of Viikki, the police caught a motorist driving at 194 kilometres per hour in an area with a similar 100km/h speed limit.
The police found it particularly alarming that the high numbers of driving offences were found in regular traffic surveillance, as no pre-announced traffic blitzes were arranged last weekend.
