Police to monitor the condition of tyres this week

In the course of this week, the police are to check the condition of motorists’ summer tyres.
The purpose of the tyre campaign is to monitor whether the tyres are in a good enough condition after the summer, considering the upcoming autumn’s rainy road conditions.
Sometimes the hot asphalt surfaces wear down the tyres in the summer, which is why they are no longer safe in rainy weather.
The tread depth of tyres is the most significant risk factor affecting aquaplaning speeds and braking distances on wet asphalt, points out the campaign conducted by the police, the Central Organisation for Traffic Safety in Finland (Liikenneturva), and the Tyre Specialists of Finland (Autorengasliitto).
In rainy weather, a tread depth of at least 4 millimetres for summer tyres could significantly improve road safety. If the tread depth is below 1.6 millimetres, the tyres can no longer be legally used.
Tyre checks will be conducted in nearly 100 localities, and the aim is to check the tyres of approximately 13,000 to 14,000 vehicles.
The police are monitoring the legitimacy of tyres, while the Tyre Specialists of Finland (Autonrengasliitto) will collect research data on the condition of tyres.
