Police to monitor Helsinki’s bus lanes next week

The Helsinki Police Traffic Safety Unit will commence an enhanced bus lane usage supervision project in the cities of Helsinki and Espoo from the beginning of next week.
The operation will be carried out by utilising automatic traffic surveillance equipment.
The aim of the project is to intervene against wrongful driving habits and to improve the flow of public transportation.
Last year the police in Helsinki issued 1,788 suspended traffic fines for the illegal use of bus lanes.
This year considerably fewer flat-sum tickets, only 1,235 of them, have been issued, despite the fact that the monitoring time has been increased by more than 50 per cent from last year.
The lanes reserved for buses can also be used by emergency vehicles, police vehicles on duty, and possible other vehicles (for example taxis) specified by an additional traffic sign.
Wherever a bus lane is on the right-hand side of the road, it can also be used by mopeds, disabled mobility scooters, and bicycles.
