Police to warn Finnish companies against crime risks
 |
The Finnish police and companies have started to compile a joint data exchange network in order to prevent crime and misconduct in business. The connections will be tested at the end of the current year. A decision on expanding the network will follow later.
According to Permanent Secretary Ritva Viljanen of the Ministry of the Interior, the objective of the project is to provide Finnish companies with communiques and warnings of existing criminal phenomena.
Viljanen dealt with criminal offences threatening companies at a team meeting on Finnish corporate security on Tuesday.
Security is one of the key factors contributing to Finnish companies’ competitiveness, noted Viljanen. However, as a consequence of increasing numbers of offences related to drugs, violence, fraud, and data security, the risks of crime and misconduct directed at Finnish companies are also growing.
Compared with other European countries, the number of shoplifting cases is also high in Finland.
Since only a part of all crimes directed at Finnish companies are reported to the police, it is not easy to prevent crime and misconduct in business, according to Viljanen.
Pentti Mäkinen, the Deputy Director General of the Central Chamber of Commerce of Finland, says that companies have been very reluctant, for instance, to admit their data security problems, as they regard such issues as sensitive.
Mäkinen noted further that the upcoming expansion of the Schengen area, which is primarily expected to make trade and travelling easier, is bound to improve also the preconditions for criminal activities.
The team on corporate security has compiled instructions for Finnish companies on how to prevent crime in business. The efficiency of these instructions will be tested during the autumn and winter in the pilot companies, namely Rautaruukki, SRV, and the Port of Turku.
