Poll: Centre and Social Democrats make slight gains

 print this
With less than two months to go before October’s municipal elections, a tough contest is brewing over the title of the country’s largest party.
According to a poll commissioned by Helsingin Sanomat and conducted by Suomen Gallup, both the Centre Party and the Social Democratic Party have increased their support slightly since a previous survey in June.
Public support for the Centre Party has gone up from 24.1% in June to 24.5%, while the Social Democrats rose from 23.9% to 24.1% in the same period.
The largest opposition party, the National Coalition Party, has failed to establish momentum, with public support lagging below the 20% mark. The June poll gave the party 19.9% support, which fell to 19.7% in August.
The Green League has also declined slightly, from an even nine percent in June to 8.9% in the latest poll. The Left League, meanwhile, has gained slightly, with 9.7% support, up from 9.5% in June.
The True Finns have gone up, while the Christian Democrats are losing popularity.
The survey involved interviews with more than 2,300 Finns, who were asked which party they would vote for if the Municipal elections were held now. The last of the interviews were conducted on Wednesday last week.
If the poll figures are compared with the municipal elections in the autumn of 2000, the winners would be the Centre Party, the Greens, and the True Finns.
