More than half of Finns remain satisfied with the performance of Tarja Halonen as their President. However, a poll published by the Oulu-based newspaper Kaleva indicates that the trend is downward.
According to the poll, conducted by Suomen Gallup in early April, 20 percent of Finns were "very satisfied" with the President’s performance, while 45 percent were "fairly satisfied".

The situation is very similar to what it was immediately after the previous elections. Six years ago, when Halonen began her first term, Halonen's approval rating was even lower than the latest poll indicates. However, by the end of the year in question, it had risen to 73 percent.
In the second round of the presidential elections, Halonen won 51.8 percent of votes cast, against 48.2 percent for her rival Sauli Niinistö.
