Poll: Finns want more referendums
A clear majority of Finns want more direct influence on politics. According to a survey commissioned by the Ministry of Justice and MTV3, two thirds of Finns would like to decide important questions affecting society by referendum.
Well over half of Members of Parliament responding to the survey were opposed to holding more referendums, which many MPs feared would lead to an increase in bad and short-sighted decisions.
The poll also showed that slightly over a third of the population have confidence in political parties. Among young people the figure was one in five.
The survey on the function of democracy involved more than 1,000 interviews.
