Approval rating of Prime Minister unchanged from June

Public approval of the three-party coalition government led by Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen (Centre) has continued to grow. However, a poll commissioned by Helsingin Sanomat and conducted by Suomen Gallup, indicates that Vanhanen’s personal popularity has not changed since June.
Public approval of Vanhanen’s government has increased with each successive poll taken at six-month intervals.
In December nearly four out of every five respondents felt that the government had succeeded in its mission either fairly well or very well. Only one percent of respondents gave a "very poor" rating. The figures for the government show an improvement from half a year ago.
Supporters of the main government party, the Centre Party, gave the highest marks to the government, with 89% rating the government’s performance as "good" or "very good".
Supporters of the other main government party, the Social Democrats, were also pleased with the government’s performance, with 83% giving it a good or very good rating.

Satisfaction in the government has also increased among supporters of two key opposition parties, the National Coalition Party and the Green League, with 79% of National Coalition Party supporters and 81% of Green supporters feeling that the government had been fairly successful.
Supporters of the Left Alliance are split: about half felt that the government has been fairly successful, and half felt that it had been rather unsuccessful.

Last June’s poll indicated an increase in the personal popularity of Prime Minister Vanhanen. Now that trend has stopped, with 84% of respondents saying that he had been very successful or fairly successful in his work.
The latest poll involved telephone interviews with about 1,000 Finns living in mainland Finland, conducted between December 7th - 11th.
