Popularity of low-cost flights up sharply in Finland

The recession has caused the popularity of low-cost flights to increase while the rest of the air travel business is suffering from considerable difficulties.
In Finland, the number of budget flight passengers increased by more than 16 per cent in the past year, according to statistics from Finavia, a state-owned commercial enterprise offering airport and air navigation services.
In May there was a record number of passengers, 75,600 in all.
“Even business customers are more and more cost-conscious these days when reserving flights. Furthermore, the supply of affordable prices has increased and this has attracted further clients”, Finavia Business Development Manager Kimmo Holopainen explains.
The number of available flights increased even more sharply than the passenger figures, by more than 22 per cent.
Holopainen reckons that the economic downturn may even cause the number of short journeys - such as weekend holidays - to increase, while travellers hunt for good hotel and shopping trip deals.
Europe’s three largest budget airlines Ryanair, EasyJet, and Air Berlin all fly to Finland.
In addition Aer Lingus and Wizz Air operate in Finland.
