President Halonen: Kyoto Treaty increases use of nuclear energy
Tarja Halonen

Finland's head of state Tarja Halonen believes the world will increasingly resort to the use of nuclear power in its future energy production.
Halonen is of the opinion that the new-found popularity of nuclear energy in the Nordic Countries, the European Union, and other nations the world over is a direct result of efforts to comply with the emission restrictions of the Kyoto Protocol.
"Everybody knows that nuclear power nevertheless has its own restrictions", the Finnish President emphasised when addressing the Delhi Sustainable Development Summit during her five-day visit to India.
Such restrictions include the instability of social systems, the dilemma of nuclear waste, to say nothing of the production of nuclear weapons in certain countries. Another aspect of the problem is that building more nuclear power eats into the resources otherwise available for activities such as the development of the use of renewable energy sources.
In Halonen's view, despite its problems, the Kyoto Treaty has still contributed favourably to the global climate policy. The recent extreme environmental phenomena have also added momentum to the solving of climate problems.
