
Presidential meeting causes congestion in Helsinki traffic

Eight European heads of state arrived in Helsinki for a two-day informal meeting on Friday morning, causing congestion in the traffic of the Finnish capital.
Police reported that breaks in traffic were expected to occur beteen 8:00 am and noon in the area between Helsinki-Vantaa International Airport and Helsinki’s district of Munkkiniemi.
All motorists were asked to avoid driving on Tuusulanväylä, Ring Road I, and Hämeenlinnanväylä on Friday morning.
Early on Friday evening there could also be short traffic breaks on Mannerheimintie as motorcades pass through.
On Saturday, disruptions to traffic are expected to occur between noon and 1:00 pm as well as from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm on Mannerheimintie, Pohjoisranta, and Mäkelänkatu.
President Tarja Halonen is hosting the meeting of the presidents of Austria, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Portugal, and Slovenia.
Finland’s president-elect from the February elections Sauli Niinistö will also introduce himself at the meeting.
