Price of hotel overnight in Helsinki comes down by a fifth

The prices of hotel rooms in Finland have come down considerably in the period from January to June this year.
According to the fresh Hotel Price Index (HPI) published by the Hotels.com Internet service, a night in a Helsinki hotel cost 19 per cent less than a year earlier.
The prices of overnight stays in hotels in Helsinki have cheapened clearly more than in other large cities in Finland.
In Tampere the price of overnighting in a hotel came down by 7% and in Turku by 6%.
During the first half of the year, the prices of hotel stays also fell considerably in the other Nordic Countries.
For example in Oslo, Norway, one would need to shell out 25 per cent for bed and board than a year ago.
Nevertheless, the cities in Finland still remained the cheapest destinations in the Nordic Countries for travellers from the eurozone.
The HPI listing is based on the reservations made through the Hotels.com website.
The HPI comparison included 78,000 hotels in more than 13,000 destinations.
While the figures obviously reflect the current economic climate, they will also be a sober reminder to hoteliers that the Finnish capital presently has a surfeit of hotel beds, particularly in the upper brackets - and yet there are a good many projects in the pipeline for yet more hotel-rooms to be opened.
