According to a survey carried out on behalf of the Finnish Broadcasting Company's news department by Taloustutkimus, popular support has increased for the nurses of Tehy, the Union of Health and Social Care Professionals.
The opinion survey indicated that 63% of respondents actually approved of the Tehy industrial action. One week previously, the figure had been 57 per cent.
Tehy members are engaged in a labour dispute over wages, and more than 12,000 nurses have resolved to terminate their contracts and resign from November 19th if no agreement can be reached.
On Wednesday of last week a mediation board headed by Archiater Risto Pelkonen began trying to broach a settlement between the Commission for Local Authority Employers (KT) and the Union of Health and Social Care Professionals.
The widespread public sympathy for the nurses is striking, given the likely impact on health care in the country if there is no resolution to the current impasse in the next two weeks.
