In 2009, the number of overnight stays in Helsinki’s hotels fell by six per cent compared with the corresponding figure in 2008.
According to a recent tourism report, business travelling started to decline in the Greater Helsinki area already in the summer of 2008, or prior to the deepest recession.
The Helsinki City Tourist & Convention Bureau believes that an upward trend in the number of overnight stays will start again this year.
Over the period from 2005 to 2008, Finland’s tourism industry still enjoyed strong growth.
The Greater Helsinki area continues to account for 51 per cent of the total sales in the Finnish tourism industry.
