Record turnout among expatriate Finns
 |
More than 50,000 Finnish citizens abroad cast absentee ballots in the second round of the presidential elections.
The turnout for voting abroad is nearly six per cent higher than the first-round turnout of approximately 48,000, which was the previous record for absentee ballots from outside Finland.
About 230,000 Finnish citizens living abroad are entitled to vote in Finnish elections, but some of those voting abroad were Finnish residents who voted while travelling.
The country with the greatest number of votes cast was Sweden, where 11,949 Finns voted, followed by Spain with 8,308.
In the United States, 3,568 Finns cast ballots. In the UK the number was 3,239, in Germany 3,096, in Thailand 2,676, and in Belgium it was 1,536.
The total number of early votes cast in both Finland and abroad rose to 1,565,987. The number of eligible voters is 4,402,622.
