Finnish lawyer Matti Wuori died in Saturday in Helsinki of a long illness at the age of 60.
Known for his outspoken advocacy of environmental and human rights causes, Wuori was an active participant in political debate at home and abroad. He has also lectured at the universities of Helsinki, Venice, and Lund.
From 1999 to 2004 he served as a Member of the European Parliament, representing the Green League, although he was never the member of any political party.
Wuori served as chairman of Greenpeace International from 1991 to 1993, and as an advisor of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission in 1996 to 1998.
Wuori worked actively on behalf human rights and environmental issues both as a writer, and in his legal practice, where he defended clients in a number of high-profile cases, including former Presidential aide Martti Manninen in the Iraq leak case of 2004.
