Restaurant suspected of using food from garbage bin to face charges

 print this
The restaurant in Turku that was suspected of collecting food from a waste bin will face charges of a violation of the Health Protection Act.
Prosecutor Tuomas Oja made the decision on Monday as a result of the failures found in the operation of the China Beijing Restaurant.
In August, the authorities for environmental health reported an offence committed by a fast food and luncheon restaurant in Turku. Previously, the Turku police had received an anonymous letter claiming that an ethnic restaurant near the market square in Turku had been fetching foodstuffs from the biological waste bin of a neighbouring grocery store.
During a surprise visit by a health officer, it could be proved by reading the EAN-code that a head of Chinese cabbage that was found in the restaurant had in fact been thrown into the waste bin by the shop two days earlier. The item had passed its sell-by date and had been routinely thrown out by the store.
