According to some whispers in the corridors at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Finnish director Aki Kaurismäki and his film Le Havre may be up for an award.
On Thursday, Le Havre topped the ranking of the English movie magazine Screen, leaving in its wake such critically acclaimed film-makers as Terrence Malick and the Dardenne Brothers.
The French magazine Le Film Francais, in turn, has regarded Le Havre as better than average in its star rating. However, a third of the movies competing at Cannes have not even been screened yet.
In the competition series, three films have traditionally been awarded with a prize, the winner receiving the coveted Palme d’Or. The directors, screenwriters, and actors also have their own awards.
The winners will be selected by a jury headed this year by the American actor legend Robert de Niro. Last year’s President of the Jury was the American director Tim Burton.
Often, by observing the comments of the professionals following the festival, one has been able to get a hint of the jury’s preferences, but just as often film-makers that have been considered “safe bets” have left Cannes empty-handed.
The winners will be announced in connection with the festival’s closing ceremony on Sunday evening.
