The Sámi chose their national day based on the fact that on February 6th, 1917, the first Nordic Sámi convention was held in Trondheim, Norway.
The participants were Sámi from Norway and Sweden, who discussed reindeer husbandry, education, and relations to the majority population.
The Sámi National Day was added to the official Finnish almanac for the first time last year.
However, the occasion has been celebrated unofficially since 1992.
