SUMMER BREAK
SUMMER BREAK
 print this

HS INTERNATIONAL EDITION IS OFFICIALLY OFFLINE FROM 24.6.-1.8.
The International Edition is closed for the whole of the month of July. Our last weekly digest of articles from the print-paper was published on June 21st, and our last dailies before the break appeared today, June 23rd, shortly before the Midsummer holiday weekend. We shall return with dailies on Monday, August 1st, and with weeklies shortly thereafter.

In the best of all possible worlds, the border guards' strike (still ongoing) and the industrial strife and lock-out in the pulp and paper industry (the paper workers rejected the latest mediation proposal on Thursday afternoon) would both have been settled this week in order that Finland could slip into its customary comfortable torpid state for the whole of July.
July is not traditionally a very "hard" news month hereabouts, either politically or on the business front, as Finland is more or less "closed" for the duration. Many people choose to begin their vacation from the Midsummer weekend, which signals a mass migration to the summer cottage.
In 2003, however, MPs had to return to their desks after the holiday weekend to choose a new Prime Minister to replace Anneli Jäätteenmäki, and this year the chances are their vacations may be interrupted in order to pass emergency legislation to ensure border security for the IAAF World Championships in Athletics.

This excepted, the nation as a whole will be snoozing for the next month or so, and doubtless any who MUST know the results of the Wife-Carrying World Championships (Sonkajärvi, July 1-3) will find an alternative source.
We'll be back in good time for the World Sauna Endurance Championships in Heinola in mid-August.

A warm and relaxing summer to all our readers, and see you in August!
