SUMMER RECESS

The International Edition will be offline for the whole of the month of July.
Today, the day before Midsummer Eve, will be the last time we update the daily items before Friday August 1st. Weeklies will return shortly after we open up again.
Though there can be exceptions, July is not traditionally a very "hard" news month in Finland, either in politics or in business, as the country, too, is in recess, and is more or less "closed" for the duration.
Many people choose to begin their summer vacation from the Midsummer weekend, which signals a mass migration to the summer cottage, and a colossal increase in the grilled sausage and cold beer intake (and also in sales of mosquito repellent).
Parliament rose on Wednesday and will not sit in plenary session again until September 9th, and Finland’s politicians will be spending more time pressing the flesh at the country’s countless summer festivals than in pressing voting buttons in the debating chamber.
Some of them will also be gearing up as candidates in the autumn's municipal elections, though in view of the recent campaign financing furore they will probably be looking a little more carefully at the sources of their campaign donations.
While the world will continue to turn, and news will doubtless be made, we hope that on the Finnish front at least, it will be possible to enjoy the short Finnish summer in peace and to return refreshed in August.
We thank all our readers for their attention and for the feedback we have received over the year, and wish everyone a pleasant summer season.
