Customers of the Nordea Bank were targeted again in a second "phishing" attempt last Friday. Phishing is the term for attempts to steal personal identity data and/or financial information, usually as a means to emptying online accounts or credit cards of money.
According to the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority, hundreds of thousands of Finns received an email attempting to acquire their Nordea online banking codes and passwords by directing them to an official-looking website. This bogus website was hosted by four Asian servers.
Nordea Finland's Chief Communication Officer Atte Palomäki called the incident unfortunate, but he did not believe it represented a high risk for Nordea's customers.
Friday's incident is the second known large-scale attempt in Finland to obtain confidential information on the Internet.
The first phishing incident targeting Finnish Nordea e-banking customers occurred at the end of October. According to Palomäki, the attempt to swindle money from Nordea's customers failed comprehensively on that occasion. Nobody was taken in by it. Nordea stresses that it NEVER sends requests for security codes or other confidential information by e-mail or over the telephone.
