The first snowfalls came down in Southern and Central Finland over Saturday
night and into early Sunday morning, but the white stuff did not stay around
for long.
Snow lay on the ground longest in eastern districts, where the temperature
remained close to freezing through much of Sunday.
As much as around five centimetres of snow fell overnight in Lahti and
Kouvola, but by Sunday afternoon there were only a few patches still to be
seen.
No new snow is forecast in the days immediately ahead,
and in fact the weather is set to warm up somewhat after the present
northerly airstream is replaced by warmer air from the west. According to
the Finnish Meteorological Institute, already by Tuesday it should be up
above 5 degrees Celsius, even in the east. Overnight frosts will linger on
until Thursday.
The weekend snowfalls had the salting and gritting crews out in many parts
of Southern Finland early on Sunday morning. There was no need as yet for
snowploughs.
