The forest products company Stora Enso says that it will resume production at the Sunila pulp mill in Kotka. According to Stora Enso, the market situation for pulp has improved since the spring, and the mill will restart by the end of the year.
However, the company notes that uncertainties remain with respect to the market situation, and the profitability of the plant in the long term. Stora Enso will reassess the future of the mill next spring.
“We are very aware that although the mill is being restarted, for the employees uncertainty will persist, and we very much regret that. However, we think this is on the whole the best alternative for our employees. We hope long-term measures will soon be found to secure the viability of the forest products industry in Finland and a lasting favourable solution concerning Russian wood duties can be reached. Solutions to those issues could extend the economic life of Sunila Mill,” said Juha Vanhainen, Country Manager, of Stora Enso, Finland in the company’s press release on Monday.
