According to the information given by the continuous monitorig stations of the Helsinki Metropolitan Area Council (YTV), the air quality in the capital and also elsewhere in the Greater Helsinki area was weakened by street dust yesterday - Monday - as well as on several days last week.
Because the dry weather is predicted to continue through the entire week, the amount of street dust is likely to remain quite high in the air of the metropolitan region.
In the morning, the readings at YTV’s monitoring stations were ”satisfactory”, ”fair”, or even ”poor” in some locations.
At the monitoring station at Mannerheimintie 5, the levels of airborne fine particles exceeded the permitted particle content.
In the Greater Helsinki Area, the airborne dust is caused mainly by the sand that is spread on icy streets in wintertime. Even though the sand has been washed off by water, the pollution concentration remains high.
Without rain, the pollution content in the air will not decline.
