Helsinki residents were blessed on Monday with an exceptionally warm spring day, and it is only going to get better.
At the Finnish Meteorological Institute measuring station in Kaisaniemi, the temperature got up to 17.1°C on Monday afternoon.
According to Senior Meteorologist Anneli Nordlund of the FMI, a 6°C spike like this above the seasonal average temperature is highly exceptional.
For the latter half of the week we have been promised 23°C and even the possibility that 25°C could get broken in some southern and western districts, so marking an official "hot spell". Nordlund observes that the statistics show only one previous occurrence of such warm days so early in the year since 1961.
Nordlund issues a caveat, however: "It would be as well to keep in mind the thought of 'the back end of winter' or at least a cold snap. The statistics show that in May there can be ground frost nearly every other night, and the temperature can even go down to freezing point", she warns.
