A middle-aged Swedish man has been confirmed as the first Swedish swine flu fatality, reported doctors from the Uppsala University Hospital on Monday evening, after having examined him.
The 37-year-old man had a high temperature on Sunday around ten days ago, reported doctor Björn Ragnarsson.
On Friday his condition weakened and he died at his home on Saturday before an ambulance managed to reach him.
The test results received in the evening confirmed that the cause of death was in fact H1N1 flu.
According to the doctors, the victim had certain risk factors for the swine flu virus, but because of privacy protection considerations these factors cannot be made public.
According to chief physician Ulf Hanson from the Uppsala University Hospital, the victim’s symptoms were fairly general, and they could have matched those of many other diseases as well.
A total of 915 people have been infected with the virus in Sweden, the Swedish authorities confirm.
Reportedly this was the first death from the A(H1N1) virus anywhere in the Nordic countries.
