Swedish police arrested Curt Lindström, the head coach of the Tampere ice hockey team Ilves, in Stockholm on Thursday on suspicion of economic crimes. Lindström denies any wrongdoing.
Officials of Sweden's Economic Crimes Bureau (EBM) interrogated Lindström on Thursday and Friday on his involvement in a company suspected of hiring undocumented workers and giving false bookkeeping information.
Lindström's arrest is linked with a case in which police have detained or remanded a total of ten people at different times. Lindström remains a suspect in the case.
Lindström has been a shareholder in a temp agency carrying his name, which is suspected of tax evasion and using undocumented labour. The company was raided in late February.
According to the Swedish newspaper Expressen, Swedish tax authorities say that the company owes about EUR 1.5 million in back taxes and other fees.
Lindström himself was not an active participant in the business activities of the company Curre Lindström i Mälardalen - he says that he simply let it use his name. He also signed papers sent to tax officials, and says that his signature was misused.
Lindström became an instant celebrity in Finland when the Finnish national ice hockey team won the World Championship in 1995, beating the Swedish home team in the final match in Stockholm's Globen arena.
Lindström's questioning ended in time for him to make it to Tampere to see Ilves win its first playoff match on Saturday , defeating the Pori team Ässät 3 - 1.
