Swimming Stadium cancels plans for autumn opening
Helsinki's Swimming Stadium, part of the former Olympic complex, will not now be staying open this coming autumn.
The plans announced in December suggested the pool would be kept open throughout the autumn months until the end of the year.
The original idea was that the extended opening would be part of the 90th anniversary celebrations of the City of Helsinki Sports Department.
However, on Tuesday the city's Sports Committee resolved to abandon the plan for economic, technical, and environmental reasons.
Tuesday's reversal was apparently mainly over the arrangements that would have been necessary in covering the pool.
The city could not be certain that the construction of a cover for the pool area - to be pulled across overnight to reduce energy costs - would have been technically feasible at a reasonable cost.
