Helsinki police announced on Thursday that they would seek the remanding in custody of the more recent partner of the woman found dismembered in Malmi at the weekend. Police say they have probable cause to suspect he is guilty on charges of murder.
Another man who was held in connection with the grisly killing, the apparent victim’s former husband, who was convicted of a similar crime seven years ago, is to be released. Both men have been in police custody for questioning since Monday.
The remand hearing is in the Helsinki District Court today, Thursday. According to the senior investigating officer, Kari Tolvanen, the head of the violent crimes unit of Helsinki Police, the intention is to seek to have the hearing behind closed doors.
Helsinki Criminal Police believe the victim is a 36-year-old woman from East Helsinki. Her severed head was found from a rubbish skip in the Malmi suburb of the capital on Sunday. The search continues for missing body parts.
