Content of messages would remain off-limits
The Ministry of Transport and Communications is reportedly preparing to propose legislation that would give employers limited rights to monitor their employees' e-mail.
According to a television news report on Tuesday evening, the proposal would allow employers to access information on when and with whom an employee has exchanged e-mail. However, it would not allow the employer to read the content of the messages.
The proposed legislation has been prompted by concerns in the technology industry of information leaks.
According to the news report, there have been concerns voiced in the Ministry of Justice that the proposal might be unconstitutional. However, Minister of Justice Leena Luhtanen (SDP) had not taken a stand on the matter as of Tuesday evening.
