Helsinki will be one of the host cities for the The Tall Ships Race sailing competition in 2013.
The vessels will set off from Århus in Denmark, sailing via Helsinki to Riga in Latvia, then continuing to Stettin in Poland.
The big sailing ships will stay in Helsinki for four days, while at least one day is to fall on a weekend.
The sailing competition is an annual event held in European waters, with the tall ships visiting the Baltic Sea region only every fourth year. In 2009, the coastal city of Turku will be one of the host ports of the The Tall Ships Race.
The competition of the big barques, schooners and square-rigged sail training ships will be one of the main events of the summer of 2013 in Helsinki.
Helsinki has been a host port for The Tall Ships Race in 1972, 1988, and most recently in 2000, when some 80 vessels participated in the race from around the world.
The event in 2000 attracted approximately 450,000 visitors to the area of Pohjoisranta and Katajanokka, where the vessels were moored.
