The management of Tallink/Silja Line and representatives of the Swedish Union for Service and Communication Employees (SEKO) have discussed events that took place on the passenger and car ferry Silja Symphony on October 25th, which prompted the union to threaten legal action against the shipping line.
Union representatives say that the managers, who were taking part in a management cruise on the ship, were intoxicated and behaved in an inappropriate and even violent manner toward members of the crew.
SEKO and Tallink have agreed to discuss possible compensation over the matter. In a press release, Tallink said that it appreciates the "positive spirit" in which the issue is being dealt with.
Tallink said that it plans to develop a unified personnel policy which shows respect for the employees, and which takes into consideration the transformation of the Estonian-owned Tallink into an international company, following the purchase of Silja Line.
The Tallink management also promised to meet with the personnel who were on duty on the night in question as soon as they have another shift at work. The managers also plan to visit other Silja ships.
SEKO nevertheless is still examining the possibility of filing criminal charges in the matter, says the union's chairman Janne Rudén.
"We will meet again on the 23rd of November. The drafting of the criminal complaint continues", Rudén said on Wednesday.
