Iira Aura and Tiia Väänänen are not worried about being involved in nightlife in Tampere, even though police report 11 cases since November in which customers, mostly women, have been drugged by substances slipped into their drinks without their knowledge.
Four of the cases in Tampere are being investigated as rapes, and the rest as assaults. Victims are mainly young women, but there were also two men.
Four cases of drink spiking were reported in Turku. No suspicions of rape are involved in any of them.
"I never leave a drink unguarded", Väänänen says.
"In groups of friends we always look after each other", Aura adds.
Aura and Väänänen, who are bar workers themselves, say that they sometimes confront situations in which their suspicions are aroused.
"If a woman comes into a bar sober and is legless after just one drink, or if a sober man leaves with a drunken woman in tow", Aura says.
"It's just hard to do anything there. One would have to be absolutely sure that it was the man in question."
Not all cases in which a customer of a bar or restaurant loses consciousness are the result of someone slipping the Mickey. Alcohol on its own can do the trick, especially if an empty stomach, or if the person drinking is taking some medication, notes Matti Hänti of the Turku police.
