A decrease in scheduled flights being flown by the Finnish airline Finnair is leading to temporary layoffs of pilots. The company announced on Friday that co-determination talks on the matter have been concluded.
      The measure involves about 44 man-work years and apply to 700 of Finnair’s 800 pilots. They are part of a cost-cutting package worth EUR 30 million.
      The measures are set to take effect in mid-April, and will target crews of different models of aircraft in different ways.
     
Demand for air travel has declined, largely as a result of reduced business travel.
      Finnair decided recently to suspend its air services to Mumbai for the summer period.
      The airline announced on Friday that it will begin discussions with personnel on temporary layoffs of personnel in catering and airport sales. The furloughs are to last between two weeks and three months and are to apply to the entire staff of Finnair Catering.
     
Companies other than Finnair also announced plans to cut personnel costs on Friday.
      Moventas Wind, which manufactures gears for wind turbines, issued a warning of temporary layoffs to its entire staff of 610. The duration of the fixed-term redundancies is an average 10 weeks.
      The Ostrobothnian newspaper publisher HSS Media is launching co-determination talks with personnel on Wednesday. The company hopes to cut its staff of 610 by 20.
      The wood processing company UPM is continuing its layoffs at its sawmills. Following con-determination talks, all 900 of the company’s sawmill employees will be temporarily laid off between April and June.
      Office supply manufacturer Martela is cutting 15 jobs and enacting some temporary layoffs, following discussions with personnel.
