Total eclipse of the moon tonight, Tuesday 4.5.2004
 print this
Those who "collect" these things may like to know that there will be a total lunar eclipse this evening, which will be visible in Finland, weather and cloud-cover permitting.
The Moon will enter the full shadow of the Earth at 20.51 local time (GMT+3), and the "totality" phase will begin from 22.52. The eclipse will be complete at around 23.30, and over by just after 2 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
This eclipse will not be seen particularly well in Finland, since the Moon is relatively low on the horizon. The further north in the country one goes, the worse the visibility is likely to be.

It is recommended that  viewers pick a spot with an uninterrupted line of sight to the south-east and south. In Helsinki, moon-gazers are likely to congregate in Kaivopuisto Park, in Paloheinä, or on the former landfill hill at Malminkartano.
There will be a second lunar eclipse this year, visible on October 28th. The eclipsed Moon takes on a dull reddish glow, as it receives the red refracted light from the Sun through the Earth’s atmosphere.
